Flame Retardent List Heading

Flame Retardants

Antimony Trioxide
1309-64-4

Where is it Commonly Found?

It is used as a PVC additive, in insulation, canvas, textiles, paper, plastics, and in combination with some chlorinated or brominated flame retardants on commercial furniture, draperies, wall coverings and carpets (typically 2-10% by weight) (KEMI, 2005; NRC, 2000). It is also used with tetrabromobisphenol-A (TBBPA) to enhance flame retardancy in printed circuit boards (NTP 2005).

HEALTH EFFECT SUMMARY

Antimony Trioxide is listed under California's Proposition 65 as known to the state of California to cause cancer (OEHHA 2011). The IARC overall evaluation for Antimony Trioxide found that it was probably carcinogenic to humans (IARC 1989).

The health effects of Antimony Trioxide have been studied in occupational settings where it has been associated with elevated rates of lung cancer and other lung diseases, as well as effects on birth, development, and female reproductive health (OEHHA 1997; NTP 2005).

How is it Categorized?

Inorganic synergist

Abbreviation

Sb2O3, ATO

Additional Facts

Antimony trioxide is a synergist for DecaBDE and other halogenated flame retardants, typically at levels one half as high as the retardant. (A synergist is a compound which enhances the performance of a flame quencher [usually a bromine- or chlorine-based halogen systems that can interfere with the reactions in a flame])
